About me

Hello there!

I'm an applied mathematician and math educator, working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Carthage College. I share my love of math by teaching undergraduates all about my favorite subject.

I work with students ranging from math majors, to engineers, to those averse to STEM fields, and in every case I emphasize the importance of being able to apply the tools and techniques we study, focusing on conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization and striving for depth rather than breadth.

I earned my Ph.D. in Applied Math from Northwestern University in the summer of 2013 and been teaching at Carthage ever since.

My main research interests are in applied mathematics, specifically in modeling dynamical systems and complex systems in general. The projects I've worked on include studying social shifts (e.g. religion, internet access, political partisanship), epidemiology (disease spread models), and the dynamics of ferromagnetism (modifications of the Ising model).
